According to early maps, Spanish explorers named the cape in the
early 16th century. Cañaveral literally means “canebrake” in Spanish
and so translates as “Cape of Canes.” Although Ponce de Leon is
credited with first exploring the region in 1513, he didn’t name it.
According to the Smithsonian Institution, Francisco Gordillo is attributed
with the first use of the name during his 1521-1525 exploration of the
area. It is said Gordillo gave it the name after he was shot by an arrow
made of cane by local natives. It had also been referred to as the “Cape
of Currents.” The swifts currents of the Atlantic Ocean made the shores
of Cape Canaveral a landing spot for many shipwrecked sailors.

Early natives of the area included the Ais and Timucuan Indians.
Both tribes were attracted by the abundance of seafood and vegetation.
The Ais were fiercely warlike and were greatly feared by other tribes
and explorers. They kept the Spanish from colonizing the area. The
Timucuan were primarily hunters and fishermen who also raised crops.

In the 1920s, a group of retired journalists from Orlando invested in
beach acreage that would become part of the city of Cape Canaveral.
Their development was originally called Journalista in honor of
their trade, but was changed to Avon-by-the-Sea. They planned
for it to be a resort area for inland residents. After most of the land
was lost during the Depression, Dickson Borssier and his father
R.B. Borssier recovered much of the property. Dickson set about to
continue his father’s early vision for the area.

Just north, on acreage called Artesia, lived descendants of Captain
Mills Burnham, the original Cape Canaveral lighthouse keeper, along
with some fishermen and a few retirees.
By 1958, Cape Canaveral’s location near the Space Center had
brought more families into the beach area.
Cocoa Beach was the nearest city, but most residents preferred to
remain separate and create a town of their own.
The city of Cape Canaveral voted to incorporate in 1962. It was
