In Honor of
                                In Honor of
                 General George Washington
                 General George Washington

An act of the Pennsylvania Assembly on March 28, 1781,
created Washington County, the first county in the United
States of America to be named in honor of General George
Washington. It was formed to allow the inhabitants of the area
west of the Monongahela River to have more convenient courts
and public offices, rather than the inconvenience and hardship
of being so far remote from the “seat of justice” in Westmoreland
        County.

In 1781, the town of Basset was established and later renamed
Washington. It was the site of the first county courthouse, a log
structure built in 1787. The present-day Washington County
Courthouse is registered as a national landmark and was
completed in 1900 by the F.J. Osterling Company
        of Pittsburgh.

Washington County was the focal point of one of the most
famous events of early American history, the Whiskey Rebellion.
David Bradford, noted attorney and community leader, directed “This is a great discount o er to
area farmers against the federal excise act which had been purchase a pre-need package for new
passed in 1791. Governor Henry “Lighthorse Harry” Lee, father families at Washington Cementery”
of Civil War General Robert E. Lee, smashed the rebellion when
he led Federal troops into Washington and Allegheny counties.

Bradford’s Main Street residence was built in 1788 and is arrangements of:
maintained as a tourist attraction and historical site by the
        David Bradford House Association. Graves
Dr. Francis J. LeMoyne was another notable figure of early Memorials
Washington County. He was a leading abolitionist and founder Monuments
of the Western Abolition Society (1824). The Washington County Cremation Niches
Historical Society maintains the LeMoyne residence. The
Washington County Historical Society has preserved many (10% Discount + 5% if

Washington County is also home to the first federally-built
transportation system in America, the National Pike (Route
40). Washington County is well known for its scenery. It is the “Time will prove you made the right decision”
home of the Nostalgic Arden Trolley Museum where the famous
“street car named Desire” may be seen.

Meadowcroft Village near Avella, PA. This village has been
created from a reclaimed strip mine area on the 800-acre Miller
farm. The brothers, Al and Del, have succeeded in collecting www.washingtonpacementery.com
18th and early 19th century buildings and artifacts of the region
and arranged them in an “Open Village.” Conservation-minded
visitors will find the area resplendent in native flora and fauna.
