A BRIEF HISTORY OF
KING GEORGE COUNTY
King George County is located at the access
to the Northern Neck between the Potomac and
Rappahannock rivers. The County was named
after King George I of England and was formed by
an act of assembly that was passed on November
24, 1720. The act stated that Richmond County
was to be divided into two distinct counties to
be known as Richmond County and King George
County, as of April 23, 1721. Its county seat is
King George, located primarily on Courthouse Road.
A couple of famous moments occurred here in King
George that not many people realize. On February 27,
1766 Thomas Ludwell Lee, Richard Henry Lee and 115
