                                                       A Brief History of

                                                      Stigler, Oklahoma

Stigler is the Haskell County seat and is located in the county’s northwestern quadrant. It
was founded in the year 1889 by Joseph S. Stigler, a former U.S. deputy marshal who had
ridden for Isaac Parker. Stigler, originally called Newman, existed as a dusty little cow
town in Indian Territory. Stigler named the settlement Newman in honor of his friend, a
STIGLER Doctor Newman, whom Stigler had persuaded to move to the village, hoping that medical
services would attract new settlers to the area.
FL WER Norman, Oklahoma, changed the name of the village to Stigler because Stigler served as
In the year 1893, the Post Office Department, in an effort to avoid confusion with

                   BOX the postmaster.
Stigler remained the same cow town until the year 1904 when the Midland Valley
Send Something Special Railroad Company added the community to its stable of railroad towns. The coming of
the railroad to Stigler boosted the town’s economy. By the year 1905, the town had grown
119 N. Broadway large enough to apply to the U.S. District Court for incorporation. In April of 1905, the
918.967.0100 Stigler, OK 74461 town was granted its incorporation, and in 1907 at its statehood, Stigler won a competition
with adjacent towns to become the county seat of Haskell County.
In 1910, the population expanded to over 1500 residents and was continuing to grow. The
town’s economy was based on agriculture augmented by the outgrowth business that was
attracted by the county seat of government. Although the economy did suffer a little after
the Great Depression, Stigler’s population increased by almost another 1,000 residents by
                                                 the year 1950.
The staff at Shelly’s Café would like to welcome you to Stigler, Oklahoma, and hopes you
